Documentary Filmmaking : Making A Travel Film – with a Nikon Z9
This was pretty much an unplanned / unscripted spontaneous chat about my documentary filmmaking journey and making a travel feature film on the Camino de Santiago in Spain. Based on a quick recap I had written on my website - SimonBurnCreative.com - I thought I would elaborate a little more as a few people were asking about the filming and gear aspect of the trip. I explain why I chose a Nikon Z9 instead of a cinema camera.
If this didn't address everything, let me know in the comments!

Travel & Street Photography with a 24-70mm? | León Spain (Camino de Santiago)
Переглядів 53521 день тому
Why would I shoot street, urban, and travel photography with a 24-70mm zoom lens? Well on a recent trip to León in northern Spain, where I was to start a 315km backpacking trip to walk the Camino de Santiago, the 24-70mm f2.8 zoom was my main lens. I explain why... Does Gear Really Matter? Leica Q2M vs Nikon Z6
Переглядів 9503 місяці тому
I think gear is overrated and have said many times gear does't matter. Yet I bought an expensive Leica Q2M Monochrom. So I decided to compare my trusty old Nikon Z6 with my new Leica Q2 M, and find out if new expensive gear really is better than older and more affordable gear. Yes, I found if you can hold the camera still enough, the internal stabilisation works well. The strap helps hold the camera still without jerky movements etc.

    A great example of right gear for the job. I was going to suggest the Z8 as a good option but then you made the most excellent point about Z9 batteries. 🙂

    • @SimonBurnCreative
      @SimonBurnCreative 15 днів тому

      My buddy had a Z8 with him and was helping out, shooting a bit of b-roll. I got to use use it a few times, and I found it was easier to shoot handheld with the Z9 because it's heavier. Weight and gravity do help get more stable footage, apparently. I think the Z9 with a cage and handle is about as heavy as I would want to go though. Cheers Julian! 🙂

    I've always liked the image with high ISO it's one of the main reasons I left photography clubs along time ago as they don't accept noise in an image (crazy rule). Infact I make sure their is noise in the image as I'm a great fan of Pictorialsm and the look they had due to the chemical process.

    Thanks for the prebooking accommodation comments. You see so many people give others flack for prebooking saying things like youre not experiencing the freedom of the camino if you prebook . But im with you. If you have to stress about where youre staying and rush all day thats not freedom

    • @SimonBurnCreative
      @SimonBurnCreative 17 днів тому

      Thanks Jason. I can only base my comments on my own experience. Having walked two Caminos now, I saw a lot of frustration and stress on both, from those without a place to sleep each night. It's my preference to take my time and explore places as I go, and turn up at my next destination when I want, knowing there is a room waiting for me. Each to their own! Buen Camino!

      You were unlucky with the weather. I walked my camino from the 16th April and had sunshine all the way. On the topic of accommodation, yes go with booked rooms. I was able to enjoy my walk knowing that food, a shower, and a comfortable bed were awaiting my arrival. Finally, although I took cameras and even a drone, 95% of my photos were on my phone! Travel really light, that's my advice!

    Great photos, Simon! I've just picked up a Nikkor 28mm 2.8 AIS for my Nikon FM2. I used 50mm for travel photography, but I felt in some situations it was too tight (especially for architecture shots). Remember shooting Berliner Dom, and I just had to keep stepping back since 50mm wasn't wide enough. Will keep using both, but I'm very excited about 28mm.

    What is travel photography? For me, it is recording memories of travels with family. 50mm is way too long for that. If sharing a meal, I'd have to leave the table to get a photo. If on a walk, I'd have to distance myself from the group to take a photo. Both 28mm and 35mm are good options, but I prefer 35mm for vacation travel. 35mm takes less mental effort to get decent photos. So I can spend more time enjoying the moments rather then thinking about how to get great photos.

    • @SimonBurnCreative
      @SimonBurnCreative 2 місяці тому

      I have to agree with you, 35mm is a perfect lens for general travel photography. In fact, I'm travelling tomorrow and a 35mm will be my main lens for walking around with. Hopefully I'll make a video about that trip. Thanks for commenting. 🙂

    Just dropped across your channel, randomly watching street photography videos and thoroughly enjoyed watching this video = I like your style and the video has some zip and life about it!....I really like the shots you got here, love the contrast and tonal richness, very filmic and pleasing to the eye, and I like the compositions very much. The guy you got at 1:45 is excellent, he's very cool, (with a hint of menace, lol) and looks like he just stepped straight out of the Sopranos, very cool indeed.. I love shooting B&W street too, using Fujifilm cameras mainly, and go for a similar kind of look, especially when really bright and contrasty...Pretty decent noise/ grain structure with higher ISO on Fuji's as well, i.e. natural looking, which can be very handy in low light/night street-photography situations, giving a nice analogue look. TBH, I only use the cameras built in red/yellow/green filters, and get decent results, but have never used lens filters...mmm, don't know why, because I do use CPL and ND filters now and then, and an FLD...After watching this video, I think I'll get some decent red and yellow screw in lens filters and give them a whirl!!..There's always something great to do with photography......Liked and subscribed!

      Hi, thanks so much for the great comment, really appreciate it! Great cameras, Fuji, perfect for street photography. You can only use coloured filters if you're shooting with a monochrome sensor or b&w film though. You can achieve the same look of a red or yellow filter in Lightroom or Photoshop though. Cheers!

      Didn't I say in the video? Probably September I'd guess.
